Updated: Aug 24, 2021

Dreadlock is a fashionable and stylish hairstyle that has been loved by various cultures around the world. Long dreads or short locs, both take time to create. If one starts to dread the short hair, it makes growing out full locks at an easier pace later on.

One can either create the dreads with a brush or can twist dreads with a comb. This article enlightens the technique to make Natural Dreadlocks for any hair type without using products.

This will make the hair grow into long dreads more naturally and is a hassle-free procedure.

Step 1: Wash Your Hair with Baking Soda

Here’s What You Need:

  • 4 tablespoons baking soda

  • 3/4 cup of water

  • Lavender or tea tree essential oil, optional

Mix the baking soda and water to make a paste. For a pleasant scent and additional benefits, add a few drops of lavender or tea tree pure essential oil. Shake well until a semi-viscous paste is formed.

Proportions are one part baking soda to three parts water, so you can make as much or as little as needed.

Step 2: Self Patch Test or Find Loctician

Progressively, many people are using baking soda to clean their hair and to remove dreadlocks. Baking soda, dissolved in water, can remove excess oil and buildup, soften your hair, and restore shine.

However, this is not always safe!!! Patch-test on your skin before using to see if baking soda causes any side effects.

Baking soda has a pH of 9, which is far higher than that of the scalp. Using a product with such a high pH may harm the hair.

Over time, baking soda can strip the natural oil from the hair, lead to breakage, and make the hair fragile.

If you find it hard to DIY, try to find an expert loctician to speed up the dreadlocks-making process in a much better and safe way without any kind of harm to your locs.

Step 3: Apply Baking Soda to your locks

Step in the shower and apply the baking soda paste to dry or wet hair. Start at the roots and also apply the paste all the way through the ends.

Step 4: Rinse and dry

Let the mixture sit for one to three minutes, then rinse thoroughly with warm water. Towel-dry your hair, then style as usual.

Step 5: Palm roll Dreads Locs

Finally, start making the dreads by the simple and most effective method by Palm rolling. It works exactly what it sounds like; to retwist you're locs you use moisturizer, locking spray (optional), clips/rubber bands, and your hands to roll them. The main thing to remember is to roll the hair in the same direction.

Palm Rolling is the most used technique in the dreadlock’s history and the best way to maintain your dreadlocks! Interlocking is an alternative method to create gorgeous dreads.

It works best in African and very curly hair. Twist and Rip is a super easy and effective way to make dreadlocks.

The Palm Rolling technique is the most effective way to create a dread by yourself. Start your locs by letting your specialists create magic.

This technique is done by applying a little quantity of wax to the loc, grabbing the loc in the base of your palm, and rubbing it back and forth vigorously.

  • Section your hair into sections that are 1 inch by 1 inch. You can use clips or rubber bands to hold the sections while you section the rest of your hair.

  • When you’re washing your hair rub your head in a clockwise motion.

  • Once you get out of the shower and your hair is dry pull your hair apart in the sections where the rubber bands/clips are.

  • After you have pulled apart the sections add some wax to each dread and palm roll.

Please be cautious of not rolling the dreadlocks too tightly, as it may damage the dreadlock and the roots of your hair. And Don't rub your palms randomly, just rub them in one direction.

Step 6: Maintenance

Remember to palm roll once a day to maintain defined dreads. While rolling your hair once a day is key, do not over-roll as it will make the dreads more susceptible to unraveling.

When it comes to how to make dreadlocks without using products, patience is key. As the hair begins to loosen throughout the days and months, simply twist the loose strands of hair around your locs-to-be.

Only perform your loc-maintenance methods on damp hair as dry hair will lead to damage and breakage.

It is always recommended to develop a good hair regime to keep their dreads clean and healthy. Dreadlock maintenance is also key to keeping your style on point.

While making the dreads make sure to twist the same way as twisting the opposite direction. It’s ok to brush the locks. Refrain from combing through the hair but using the bristle brush will help to keep the hair clumped together.

Also, covering the hair at night with a dread sock will not only aid in allowing the hair to stay soft but will also prevent messing up while one sleeps and rolls around.
