How to Make Dreadlocks with Straight Hair?

Can straight hair become dreads? That’s the most frequently asked question from me from my clients. And my simple answer is YES!! There are so many methods to transform your Straight hair into beautiful dreadlocks unique hairstyles.

The most popular methods such as Backcombing and Palm Rolling are commonly used methods to make dreads with straight hairs, however, most likely you require one more person for the help to get it done.

In this blog, I'm going to share how to make dreadlocks with straight hair.

Here, I'm going to discuss the 6 methods that you can use to turn your straight hairs into luxury dreads. 1st of all it is highly recommended that don't use wax while doing it.

#1. Palm Rolling

Palm rolling method is precisely what it sounds like. Just Twist and retwist your hairs using locking spray/ moisturizer (optional) and roll the hairs in the same direction.

It is a traditional dreads maintenance method in which the hairs get rolled in circular formation using your palm. Palm rolling is easier and simpler to do & requires less time. So, if you want natural look, freeform dreadlocks, use palm rolling and separating them.

If your dreadlocks are new or you have a lot of loose hairs, palm rolling method for each dread is an easy way to make dreads from with straight hairs.

Consistent palm rolling not only helps in creating smooth Locs but also that’s the best way to avoid lumps and bumps in hairs. By using your hands to foster the dreadlocks, the palm-roll method for dreads maintenance is very simple and can be done on your own.

#2. Crochet Dreadlocks

The Crochet dreadlock method that uses a small dread hook tool that helps in creating and maintaining dreads. It’s a natural dreadlock process for long term that gives a straighter dread look.

A crochet hook is used to pull the hair to create tight, consistent, and well-knotted dreadlocks. I need a practice using crochet so that it shouldn’t tear the hair

For most people, a crochet needle of 0.5mm – 0.75mm is ideal for the installation, maintenance, and tightening of your dreadlocks.

This method work on almost all hair types and the best part is that there is no need to use any products to make dreads. The crochet dreadlocks method is a most refined skill that takes 5-7 weeks to understand and 2-3 years to master.

#3 Interlocking (Twisted) Dreadlocks

The interlocking dreadlock method also called “twisting”, “root flipping” or “latch hooking dreads”, is fast, quick, and easy to make dreadlocks with straight hairs. It is very good for African hairs and to make micro dreads, that is small dreads.

The interlocking dreadlock technique can be accomplished with fingers or using tools. A major benefit of interlocking locs is that it strengthens the base of the dreadlocks to handle the weight of the rest of locs. As Dreadlocks significantly gain weight & get heavier as they grow longer over a period of time.

It also offers you long-lasting locs maintenance. Hence, on average, you can consider 4-6 weeks to re-twist the dreads. It will hold your locs tight, shows instant results, is super easy to learn and require no products to create your cool fancy locs.

#4 Twist and Rip Dreadlocks

In Twist and Rip dreadlocks method, you need to first make the sections of hair depending on the size and the number of dreadlocks you want. Then twist each section of hair, and then pull each section of hair in opposite directions.

The best to do is pushing the twisted hair sections up towards the roots, which helps in creating knots. This process is repeated again and again for all the hairs sections until the locs are created.

The twist and rip method to create dreads with straight hairs is a simple and gentle way having no damage, as you just need to use your fingers and hands. It is one of the easiest dreads methods AND is a favorite method for those who love minimal maintenance.

#5 Backcombing Dreadlocks

Backcombing is another most popular dreadlock creating method. I work mostly on all hair types; however, it’s preferred locs method for short hairs.

The backcombing dreadlocks method is the one in which you take a small bunch of hairs and comb it back towards the scalp. Make sure to backcomb the hairs as close as possible to the hair roots.

It requires a constant comb to tease the hairs in each section up towards the roots to create knotted hair, so there are chances of the sore scalp. Also, it’s a time-consuming dreadlock method and if not done carefully, it will make your hair frizzy and will look messy.

Conclusion!!

What-so-ever dreadlocks method you choose to create your unique dreads style, in the end it’s always recommended to take utmost care of your dreads. Invest in high-quality dreads-friendly hair care products for loc’s moisture, spray, cleaning and conditioning.

Make sure to use natural and chemical-free products for dreads maintenance. Indulge in scalp massage for 10-15 minutes every day prior to bedtime.
